Data story: India records 50,407 new cases; test positivity rate drops to 3.5%

India on Saturday reported a net decrease of 87,359 active coronavirus cases to take its tally to 610,443. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 0.82% (one in 122 ). The country is sixteenth among the countries most affected by active cases. On Friday, it added 50,407 cases to bring its total case count to 42,586,544 from 42,536,137, an increase of 0.12%. And, with 804 new deaths, its Covid-19 toll reached 507,981, or 1.19% of total confirmed infections.

With an additional 4,682,662 doses of Covid-19 vaccine administered on Friday, the total number of vaccines in India has so far reached 1,722,947,688. The number of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, has reached 41,468,120 – or 97.37% of the total number of cases – with 136,962 new recovered cases reported on Saturday.

Now the sixteenth worst affected country by active cases, third by deaths, second by total cases and recoveries, India has added 505,880 cases in the last 7 days.

India now accounts for 0.82% of all active cases globally (one in 122 active cases) and 8.74% of all deaths (one in 11 deaths).

Among states with more than 10 million people, the top 5 in number of vaccines per million people are Delhi (1547042), Gujarat (1525809), Jammu and Kashmir (1482708), Kerala (1443681) and Uttarakhand (1413346).

The number of active cases across India on Saturday saw a sharp decrease of 87,359 from 92,987 on Friday.

With 136,962 new recoveries daily, India’s recovery rate stands at 97.37%, while the fatality rate remained unchanged at 1.19%.

The Indian states and UTs with the worst death rates at present are Punjab (2.33%), Nagaland (2.14%) and Maharashtra (1.83%). The rate at no fewer than 14 is higher than the national average.

India’s daily new closed cases stand at 137,766 – 804 deaths and 136,962 recoveries. The proportion of deaths in the total number of closed cases amounts to 0.58%.

India’s 5-day moving average of the daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.1%.

India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 585.3 days and for deaths at 437.6 days.

Overall, the five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Kerala (16,012), Maharashtra (5,455), Karnataka (3,976), Tamil Nadu (3,086) and Rajasthan ( 2890).

India conducted 1,450,532 coronavirus tests on Friday to bring the total number of tests conducted so far in the country to 749,320,579. The recorded test positivity rate was 3.5%.

The five states most affected by the total number of cases are Maharashtra (7,835,088), Kerala (6,381,063), Karnataka (3,921,095), Tamil Nadu (3,431,154) and Andhra Pradesh (2,311,133).

Maharashtra, the worst affected state overall, reported 5,455 new cases to take its total to 7,835,088.

Kerala, the second worst affected state in the total tally, added 16,012 cases to bring its tally to 6,381,063.

Karnataka, the third worst affected state, reported 3,976 cases to bring its total to 3,921,095.

Tamil Nadu added 3,086 cases to bring its total to 3,431,154.

Andhra Pradesh saw its tally rise from 1,166 to 2,311,133.

Uttar Pradesh added 1,777 cases to take its total to 2,054,995.

West Bengal added 767 cases to bring its tally to 2,009,717.

Delhi added 977 cases to bring its total to 1,849,596.
